Have you ever needed to escape into the pages of a good book? Or been comforted by a hug from your favorite stuffed animal? Then you understand the power of Books to the Rescue!
Have you ever needed to escape into the pages of a good book? Or been comforted by a hug from your favorite stuffed animal? Then you understand the power of Books to the Rescue!

What is it?

The mission of Books to the Rescue! is to COMFORT KIDS IN CRISIS. All across America, this non-profit, community-engagement program is touching the lives of children while simultaneously promoting literacy. Working in Dakota, Ramsey, Anoka and Wright counties in Minnesota, first responder vehicles will be stocked with engaging kids’ books ready to give at a time in need to help soothe and distract children during emergency situations.

This grassroots program, which is solely funded by donations and grants, stocks First Responder Vehicles and Child-Centric Agencies with COMPLIMENTARY, NEW, engaging children’s books to help serve as resources to calm and redirect children in traumatic, stressful situations.

The books

Inside each complimentary, refillable Comfort Bag (sized to fit tightly inside first responder vehicles), you will find brand new books and in some cases matching stuffed animals specific to match the book, to reach 40 to 50 children, ranging in age from infant thru early teens. Every child who receives a new Books to the Rescue!™ item will keep his or her gift. Each bag also contains evaluation forms which provide vital feedback and restock information for program organizers.

Comfort Bags contain the following new items (nothing used): Chapter, Activity, and Picture Books. These items are carefully selected to address children’s different emotional needs such as anxiety, fear or loneliness. First responders and governing officials can choose when to best use these resources to help redirect the child’s attention away from the crisis and refocus his or her attention onto the book.

(Brand new books are purchased at the request of local responders due to the uncertainty of where the books may come from and what they have been exposed to - for the safety of the children and any adverse reaction that could occur. As well as we can refill the bags with the specific books that make the most impact.)

The Twin Cities chapter began in Dakota County, with the Sheriff's office in Summer 2016.

Sheriff Tim Leslie is excited to launch this program in Dakota County. He says, “Our deputies continue to encounter children and families in crisis and can use the Books to the Rescue! to specifically help calm children who are facing a challenging circumstance. Resources like this, provided by the community, give us another tool to help children and families.

We are grateful and appreciate the generosity and support we get from the Dakota County residents each and every day.”

How you can help

In every community we serve, the local liaison for Books to the Rescue! gains authorization and permission from every agency and law enforcement BEFORE soliciting donations and sponsorships. It is our goal to partner with a local 501c3 that will help us house, track and dispense funding; secure a non-profit status; and ultimately, keep local dollars in our own communities.

This program relies solely on donations from the community. Your tax-deductible donation will touch the lives of even more children thanks to a 50 percent matching grant program with Usborne Books & More. This means that a $1000 gift will actually be increased to $1500 in books! Usborne Books & More will also pick up the tab on all shipping charges. To learn more about this generous matching grant program known as Literacy for a Lifetime, click here: literacyforalifetime.com
